The vegan wave has gained huge popularity in recent times and has garnered a great following. The first thing that comes to mind, when you hear the term ‘vegan’, is the exclusion of clothes and food made at the expense of harming animals. However, that’s not all that veganism limits itself to. Many makeup brands out there, contain ingredients that come from animals, dead or alive. That’s where vegan makeup comes to the rescue!

Vegan means that a product does not contain animal or animal-derived ingredients, which includes honey, beeswax, gelatin and collagen and these are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.To many, ‘vegan’ also means that the product is free from animal testing as well. But ‘vegan’ and ‘cruelty- free’ have very different definitions. For a product to be called ‘cruelty- free’, there should not be any form of animal testing during the making of the product.

Nonetheless, it’s important to not here that a cruelty- free product is not necessarily vegan. It is common for companies to carry out the final product or along the way. At times, it is even “required by law” to test on animals by a third party as per the regional laws around the world.

Here are a few reasons why vegan and cruelty-free makeup must be in your vanity:

Cruelty signifies cruel

If you think that lab rats are the only animals used for testing, think again! Bunnies, mice, dogs, cats and even apes are most commonly used animals for these tests. And these tests are not as painless as a needle prick. These tests are torturous and cause suffering to the poor babies. Imagine a cute little puppy being held down forcibly while someone pours chemicals on them. Would you ever support that? No, right? It’s the same pain for the other animals too.
